Yes, I know it took me a long time to discuss the Kill Blue manga on my blog.
Well, what can I say?
It’s hard to talk about the Shonen Jump manga when the manga you thought had the potential to go beyond 100 chapters ends prematurely.
You’ll often see that with most of the manga you read on MANGA Plus.
Believe me, it’s not easy to talk about the manga whose fate is unknown.
For all you know, the manga you enjoy reading may end up in the manga graveyard after that.
Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Kill Blue, considering that the manga is still going strong, with the manga surpassing 100 chapters as I write this.
Perhaps we can breathe a sigh of relief now that the manga is here to stay.
Even if it does end, at least we can rest assured that the manga will wrap things up nicely instead of having to tie all the loose ends by force.
What the Kill Blue manga is all about
Here’s the book description that I got from MANGA Plus.
The new series from the creator of Kuroko’s Basketball! Can a legendary assassin redo his life as a middle schooler?!
What got me to read the manga
Let’s be honest here, who doesn’t want to read the manga after knowing that Kill Blue is a new series from Kuroko’s Basketball’s mangaka?
I’m sure you would read the manga even if you’ve never read Kuroko’s Basketball before, wouldn’t you?
Well, at least I would.
Will I still give the manga a try if it happens to be a manga by a new mangaka?
Of course, I will.
Pretty much majority of the manga I recommend on this blog are by the new mangaka.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a new manga by an established mangaka or a new mangaka.
I will still give the manga a try, especially if the manga has an interesting premise.
And this manga has it.
What makes the Kill Blue manga worth reading
We all know that Shonen Jump has plenty of hitman and assassin manga, whether they’re ongoing or buried in the manga graveyard.
So, what is it that makes Kill Blue any different from any other hitman and assassin manga out there?
If anything, I should say it’s a mish-mash of every single genre possible, which surprisingly doesn’t turn into a hot mess.
One moment, you’ll have a futsal match with a guy who badmouths the Home EC Club.
And the next thing you know is they’re now stuck on a remote private island with a killer on the loose, ready to kill any of them at any time.
Think that’s the end of it?
Nope, you’ll be hard pressed to find out that the members of the Home EC Club are having an airsoft battle with the student council.
Just what kind of manga is this?
Here we are, thinking that the manga is paying homage to Detective Conan, where we have Ogami who turns into a middle school kid after getting stung by a genetically modified wasp.
Instead, we have a hodgepodge of everything.
Think the action scenes are absent in this manga?
Well, you’ll be pleased to find out that the manga does have action scenes which are on par with what you see in Sakamoto Days.
Imagine sending the chalks flying with your textbook to create a smokescreen so then you can beat the crap out of the bad guy.
With such an unpredictable story and unique action scenes, you just don’t know what awaits you in every chapter.
So, don’t sleep on this manga just yet if you think Kill Blue is just another hitman rehashing the same thing all over again.
What I didn’t expect when I read the manga
Funny but true, I never expected that the manga to last this long.
Sure, the manga isn’t exactly dominating the ranks like Sakamoto Days.
But the manga isn’t at the rock bottom either.
If I have to say rank-wise, I will say the manga’s rank is somewhere in the middle, similar to where Witch Watch and The Elusive Samurai are ranking in the chart.
Even so, that is still a cause for celebration, considering that some manga will still get booted out despite their rank falling somewhere in the middle.
Who should read this manga?
If you’re looking for a manga that has unique action scenes like the ones in Sakamoto Days and you don’t mind the hodgepodge of everything, then Kill Blue is for you.
Even if you’re okay with the mishmash story, you may find some parts of the story feel more like a distraction rather than contributing to the actual story.
Believe me, that was what everybody was thinking when Ogami and everyone in the Home EC Club were stuck on the remote private island.
It feels like this part of the story seems out of place, especially with the part where there’s a killer on the loose at the place where they live.
And it feels like the story is going nowhere, too, until Ogami uncovers something pivotal that ties back to Mitsuoka Pharmaceuticals.
I guess we should just let the mangaka cook, even if the story doesn’t make that much sense to us.
