I enjoy reading Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Kakushigoto manga just as much as any other manga I recommended on my blog.
Well, what’s not to love about the manga?
Both manga is funny in their own way.
While there’s nothing spectacular about the character design, each character has a unique name that represents their characteristic trait.
Both manga even has a character that they dub normal and love to poke fun at their normal thought process and also their normal behavior.
In Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, there’s Nami who is known as the ordinary girl in the class.
And in Kakushigoto, there’s Kakeru Keshi, Goto-sensei’s assistant who has a normal thought process than everyone else in the studio. You can also add Tomaruin into the mix too since he’s just as clueless as Kakeru.
As much as I enjoy reading both manga, I realize that I tend to favor one manga over the other.
And if people ask me which comedy manga they should read, I will mention both. But unlike the one that I tend to favor, I usually recommend the other with a caveat.
Does it mean that the one I favor is far better than the other?
When I say that I tend to favor this one over the other, you probably think that the other one must be inherently bad, right?
Well, I won’t go as far as saying that I didn’t favor the other one because it was bad or anything.
In fact, I will say that both manga is amazing in their own way.
Rather, the reason why I didn’t favor the other one is that it’s too dark and strange for my liking.
I kinda regret it for googling how the story in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ends. But after reading about it, I feel that the ending just doesn’t jive with me at all.
I have yet to read that far as I write this. But from what I discover, the ending in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is taking a dark and yet strange turn.
Yes, I admit that I don’t like how the story ends, even for someone like me who enjoys reading a story with a dark theme.
It’s because of this reason that I favor Kakushigoto over Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
Why I prefer Kakushigoto over Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
If you read my blog post about Kakushigoto, I did say that I never expect a story like this to be heartwarming.
Perhaps I must be assuming that Kakushigoto isn’t that much different from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, minus the twisted ending.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the kind of person who enjoys reading something that will make me bawl like a broken faucet.
But then again, I’d rather read a story like that over something that feels disturbing to the point that it becomes somewhat strange.
Another thing that I love about Kakushigoto is that how closer the story is to reality, even if the story is about life as a mangaka and the manga industry in general.
If you enjoy reading manga like Bakuman, then you’ll enjoy reading Kakushigoto too since the manga does talk about the manga industry from another person’s perspective.
Despite all seriousness, the manga is hilarious too. But unlike in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, the story in Kakushigoto tends to be a lot more grounded.
That makes Kakushigoto a much easier manga to recommend since it has a little bit of everything – real-life story, weirdness, and seriousness.
Does it mean that I no longer recommend people to read Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei?
The answer is not at all. If you enjoy reading a comedy manga with a darker theme, then there’s no doubt that you may enjoy reading Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei manga.
Even if the manga doesn’t have a disturbing ending, just remember that the story revolved around someone who tried to commit suicide and failed.
So, you’re bound to see Itoshiki Nozomu trying to hang himself again. And strangely enough, it never materialized despite his desire for wanting to commit suicide so badly.
While it’s true that the story tends to poke fun at Itoshiki Nozomu’s desire for wanting to commit suicide, it can still feel a bit disturbing to some people even if it’s only for a joke.
So, yes, I will still recommend Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei to people but with a caveat.
Am I not going to continue reading Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei?
At this point, you probably think that I’m going to abandon Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for good because I find the ending to be disturbing to my liking.
Believe it or not, I still want to continue reading the manga despite the ending. In fact, I even want to read the manga till the end just to see how disturbing the ending is for myself.
Remember that I only knew about the ending from other people who posted the ending online. So, it’s possible that the ending may not be as disturbing as I thought it would be.
Will I change my mind about the ending in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei? Possible. Even if I did change my mind about it in the end, I will still prefer Kakushigoto over Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
I just love the story, that’s why.
