Truth be told, I almost wrote the title as The Modern Pied Piper, even though it should be The Pied Piper.
For those who don’t know, it’s the title of my upcoming fourth book of the Trigger Locked series.
The book isn’t coming out yet as I write this.
But you can bet that you’ll learn more about it once the book is ready for publication.
And now, back to The Pied Piper book.
I have to admit it’s been so long since I talked about an interesting nonfiction book to read.
Why is it that I barely recommend any nonfiction book to read for so long?
Are there no nonfiction books that are worthy enough of my recommendation?
In all honesty, that’s never the case at all.
If anything, I find that I have more interesting nonfiction books to read than the manga and light novels.
The only reason there’s a lack of nonfiction book recommendations is that I have so many manga to catch up on MANGA Plus and Manga UP!
Thankfully, I managed to get my schedules sorted out.
You can bet you’ll be seeing more interesting nonfiction books on my blog anytime soon.
What The Pied Piper is all about
Here’s the book description that I got from Amazon.
With makeup and an affected Elvis pout, Tucson’s Charlie Schmid was a crude parody of a bad-boy heartthrob. In 1964, he still had a hold on girls who’d follow him anywhere. He murdered three of them.
It was the dawn of the free-love movement—perfect for a magnetic madman who’d also foreshadow its end a few years later in the malignant charisma of Charles Manson. The inspiration for a classic story by Joyce Carol Oates, Schmid, the most bizarre serial killer of any era, was the epitome of a narcissist flattered into believing he could get away with murder.
The Pied Piper is part of Bloodlands, a chilling collection of short page-turning historical narratives from bestselling true-crime master Harold Schechter. Spanning a century in our nation’s murderous past, Schechter resurrects nearly forgotten tales of madmen and thrill-killers that dominated the most sensational headlines of their day.
What got me to read the book
Okay, I won’t deny that what got me to read the book has more to do with the book being similar to my Trigger Locked fourth book working title.
So, it makes sense that I’ll be drawn to the book.
But another reason for me to pick this book is that it’s also another book by Harold Schechter.
If the name sounds familiar to you, it sure is.
After all, he’s the author of another book that I’ve talked about in the past, Hell’s Princess.
Since I’m already familiar with his other work, I already know what to expect when I pick this book.
What makes The Pied Piper worth reading
Many people seem to think that this type of book is pretty much a recollection of all the crimes the perpetrator already committed throughout his or her lifetime.
Well, you’re not wrong about that.
For the most part, that’s the essence of the book.
But the thing about this sort of book is that it isn’t just about the laundry list of crimes and their victims.
Rather, it allows us to dive into the psychology of murder.
Things like why they did what they did, and whether their family upbringing has something to do with it at all.
If you’ve already read a few of these books, albeit with a different perpetrator, then you may already have inklings of those questions.
The only thing that remains a black box is what eventually happened to them in the end.
As you can already tell, serving in prison isn’t the end of the story.
That’s what makes a book like this an interesting read, since you get to know everything about them until their final moment.
You certainly won’t know about it in the news for sure unless that person receives a death sentence.
If the topic of the psychology of murder fascinates you, then you may enjoy reading this book.
What’s more, it’s a short book, too, which is perfect if you’re looking for a quick read.
What I didn’t expect about this book
What comes to your mind when you think about ebooks?
For many of us, ebooks are just a wall of text, with some images and visuals in between.
And if you’re reading light novels, you get to see colored pages with some illustrations in between the story.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case with the ebook version of this book, though.
Sure, it does have a few images in between.
But what’s amazing about this book is that it has interactive content at the beginning of the book.
Things like an animated book cover and a short video featuring all the images used in the book.
Of course, animated visuals seem like the staple in Harold Schechter’s books since you get to see the same thing in Hell’s Princess.
But this book somehow takes interactive content to another level, though.
Seeing this interactive content makes me wish the same for my books.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you got to see a short animated video of the fight scene in my book?
I can’t be sure if it’s just the Kindle version thing or not.
But honestly, it would be amazing if I could have something similar for my books, too.
Who should read this book?
There’s no doubt this book is worth considering if you’re looking for a short book and you don’t mind reading books about serial killers.
But if you’re looking for something similar to books like The Ice Man and Hell’s Princess, then you will certainly enjoy reading this book, too.
The only reason why you will need to stay away from this book is that you don’t like to read anything true crime.
Where to buy The Pied Piper book
It’s too bad that the book is only available on Amazon.
And that means you can only buy the book on Amazon, nowhere else.
But on the flip side, you can read this book for free if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.
Of course, you can get the book in print or audiobook as well.

I'm an author who writes thriller and suspense light novels. But when I'm not writing a book, I love to blog about books that I enjoy reading. Some of these books also become the inspiration for my novel as well.
Most of the books that I talk about on my blog tend to be manga and light novels, with nonfiction books in between. If you're looking for interesting books to read, then you will certainly enjoy reading my blog.
