If there’s one word to describe my Fall 2023 Anime list, I will say it’ll be the word unexpected.
Yes, I admit there’s nothing unexpected when the majority of the anime that I’m currently watching is the continuation of the previous seasons.
But there are also a handful of them that I find interesting considering I tend to stay away from these types of anime for the most part.
Well, I don’t see anything wrong with watching anything that is outside of my usual genre as long as it has an interesting premise.
Thus, a few of the unexpected anime made it to my list.
Wondering which anime that I never thought I would enjoy watching?
Well, you’ll find out about it in this post nonetheless.
And if you’re wondering about what other anime comes out this season, you can take a look at the list right here.
My Fall 2023 anime must-watch list
As you can see here, it’s no secret that anime is my go-to resource when it comes to finding which manga and light novels to read.
If you’re wondering which manga and light novels I’ll add to my reading list, you can bet you’ll know about it in this blog post too.
With that said, here are the Fall 2023 anime that I’m currently watching right now.
Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro
Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of the isekai genre, saves for the Ascendance of a Bookworm.
So, it’s hard for me to believe that I would enjoy watching Buta no Liver.
Yes, I won’t deny that the premise where the main character becomes a pig after he faints from eating a pork liver is ridiculous.
But I do find the premise interesting especially since the story takes a darker turn after a few episodes.
So, the story isn’t just about our main character on a journey to the capital so then he can turn back into a human with Jess, a girl who can communicate with him through telepathy.
But he also needs to protect Jess from danger considering that Jess is coming from a race where their body parts are sought-after.
The story takes a darker turn, eh?
For now, I don’t have any plan to add the light novel to my reading list. But if you’re interested in the light novel, you can get it on none other than Amazon:
Butareba – The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig on Amazon
Depending on when you read this post, the light novel is currently available for pre-order as I write this.
Dr. Stone S3
How can I not add this anime to the list when it’s one of the anime that I’m so looking forward to watching every single week?
Heck, I even recommended the manga in the past too.
Just to let you know that this one is the second part of the third season.
Unless you’ve read the manga before, I don’t recommend that you jump straight into the second part of the third season right away.
It’s best that you watch the anime from the beginning for better context.
Houkago Shounen Hanako-kun
If you’re wondering if it’s the same Hanako-kun from Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun, it really is.
It’s just that this one is a spin-off to the main story.
What I love about this anime is that it’s only ten minutes long.
But even with that, I still don’t recommend that you jump straight into the spin-off right away without understanding what’s happening in the main story.
And if you prefer to catch up with the main story through manga instead, you can read my blog post about this manga right here.
Just so you know the spin-off manga is available in English as well. You can buy the manga on Amazon right here:
After School Hanako-kun manga on Amazon
Will I be getting the manga? You can bet I will since it only has one volume.
Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri
It’s obvious that I would add this anime to my list considering that it’s my kind of story. And it’s the manga that I recommended in the past too.
If you’re a fan of a detective story with a little bit of comedy in between, then you will certainly enjoy watching this anime.
It’s too bad that the manga is yet to be licensed for digital and print release.
But the good news is you can read the manga online through MANGA Plus. Keep in mind that you’ll need to sign up for the Standard plan if you want to read the chapters in between.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto
Not going to lie this anime somehow reminds me of Kokyu no Karasu because of its setting that takes place in the imperial palace.
And it also gives me the same vibe as the Isekai Yakkyoku anime too since the main character is well-versed in medicine.
Of course, how can I not mention the male main character that many people seem to assume is a eunuch?
Can’t say for sure if he is or not, but I doubt he’s a eunuch like many would guess.
The only reason that made people think he was a eunuch is that he’s always tending to issues related to the concubines and eunuchs.
Will I be adding the light novel to my reading list?
Well, you bet I will.
If you’re thinking about adding the light novel to your reading list as well, you can get it right here on Amazon:
The Apothecary Diaries Vol.1 on Amazon
Mahoutsukai no Yome S2
As you can see here, this one is the second part of the second season.
Pretty mouthful, right?
While I admit I kind of forget what happened in the first season, I’m glad that there’s no huge gap between the first and the second part.
Imagine when you have to crack your brain, trying to recall the story that takes place in the first part when there’s a huge gap in between.
As you can already expect, this isn’t the kind of anime that you’ll jump right away.
And it’s even more so when this is the second part of the second season, with the story in the second part continuing from the story in the first part.
If you want a better understanding of the story, then I highly recommend you watch the anime from the beginning.
And if you prefer to catch up by reading the manga instead, you can buy the manga right here on Amazon:
The Ancient Magus Bride Vol.1 on Amazon
Megumi no Daigo – Kyuukoku no Orange
If there’s one thing I have to say about this anime, it’s that the anime reminds me of the TV series 911.
Yes, I’m talking about that 911 series starring Angela Bassett. It’s one of the series that I enjoy watching despite some of the episodes giving me the creeps sometimes.
And if you think Megumi no Daigo will be the tame version of 911, you’ll be hard-pressed to find out that it doesn’t.
If I have to compare, I will say that the scenes in Megumi no Daigo are giving you the chill a lot more than the ones in 911.
While the story in Megumi no Daigo has a slow start due to the characters undergoing the training at first, the story does pick up the pace once Onoda joins the squad.
And it doesn’t take that long for us to see him in action either. It only took him hours to get thrown into the rescue operation right after he was reporting for duty.
I can’t say for sure if the story in this one ties back to the manga that came out in 1997.
But considering that the main character in the other manga is also called Daigo, I’m guessing he must be Toake’s father or something.
Well, I could be wrong about that. So, let me know about the manga in the comment.
While the second part of the manga isn’t available in English yet, you can read the English version of the 1997 manga if you’re interested.
Will I be adding the manga to my reading list?
Perhaps not for the time being. But who knows I’ll change my mind about it once the story is progressing.
Sousou no Frieren
To be honest, I never imagined that I would enjoy watching this anime considering that I’m not into the fantasy genre that much.
And it’s even more so when it revolves around a magical character such as an elf.
Even with that, I find the premise intriguing since it touches upon the importance of honoring and treasuring the friendships you build in your lifetime.
Of course, that’s not the only thing I find the anime fascinating.
Despite we have the main character who is an elf, we barely see any elves around. It looks more like they’re some kind of a rare breed or something.
Even Frieren admitted that it’s been so long since she met another elf.
I’m not sure if I’m ever going to add the manga to my reading list or not.
But if you’re interested in giving the manga a try, you can get the manga right here on Amazon:
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Vol.1 manga on Amazon
Spy x Family
If there’s an anime that doesn’t require you to watch from the beginning, I will have to say it’s this one thanks to its summary in the first episode.
Of course, I still recommend that you watch the anime from the beginning for better context.
Feel like wanting to catch up with the story through manga instead?
You can read this post right here if you’re curious about the manga.
